DTF Transfer Pressing Instructions
Professional Results Start with the Right Press!
At MS Graphics, we want every transfer to look great, feel comfortable, and last. Whether you're pressing a single shirt or producing hundreds of garments, following the correct application instructions is essential for a professional, long-lasting finish.
We use these same settings in our own production process to achieve consistent, high-quality results.
Recommended DTF Pressing Settings
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 305°F (152°C) |
| Press Time | 10 Seconds |
| Pressure | Medium to Firm |
| Peel Method | Hot Peel |
| Optional Second Press | 5 Seconds |
| Equipment | Commercial Heat Press Recommended |
These are the settings we use in our production facility. Results may vary depending on your heat press, garment material, and application conditions.
Step-by-Step Application Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Heat Press
-
Set your heat press to 305°F.
-
Set the timer to 10 seconds.
-
Adjust the pressure to medium/firm.
-
Allow your heat press to reach the proper temperature before beginning.
Pro Tip: Make sure your heat press provides even heat and pressure across the entire platen.
Step 2: Pre-Press Your Garment
Place your garment flat on the lower platen.
Pre-press for approximately 3–5 seconds to remove excess moisture and wrinkles.
This helps create a smooth surface for your transfer.
Step 3: Position Your DTF Transfer
-
Place your garment on the heat press.
-
Position the transfer with the printed design facing the fabric and the carrier film facing up.
-
Make sure the design is straight and positioned correctly.
-
Avoid placing the transfer over seams, buttons, zippers, or other uneven surfaces.
Step 4: Press Your Transfer
With your transfer positioned correctly:
-
Temperature: 305°F
-
Time: 10 seconds
-
Pressure: Medium/Firm
Close your heat press and apply consistent pressure for the full 10 seconds.
Step 5: Hot Peel the Carrier Film
Once the pressing cycle is complete:
Peel the carrier film immediately while it is still hot.
Start at one corner and peel smoothly and consistently across the design.
If any portion of the transfer begins lifting with the film, stop peeling, reposition the film, and repress before trying again.
Step 6: Optional Second Press (Recommended)
For an additional finishing step, we recommend a second press.
-
Remove the carrier film completely.
-
Cover the printed design with a clean, blank T-shirt or a heat-resistant flex pad designed for pressing.
-
Press for an additional 5 seconds at 305°F using medium/firm pressure.
-
Remove the covering material and allow the garment to cool.
This optional finishing press can help improve the finished appearance, texture, and bond of the transfer to the fabric.
Important Tips for Best Results
Use a Quality Heat Press
A commercial-style heat press with accurate temperature control and consistent pressure is recommended. Household irons and handheld heat presses may produce inconsistent results.
Check Your Pressure
Insufficient pressure can cause poor adhesion. Excessive pressure may distort the design or affect the garment.
Watch for Seams and Uneven Surfaces
Collars, seams, pockets, and zippers can prevent even contact. Use a pressing pillow or adjust garment placement when necessary.
Always Test Specialty Fabrics
Some performance fabrics, polyester garments, nylon, and heat-sensitive materials may require adjusted pressing conditions. Always verify the garment manufacturer's heat tolerance and perform a test application before production.
Keep Your Pressing Surface Clean
Avoid lint, moisture, and debris between the transfer and garment.
Caring for Your Finished Garment
Proper garment care helps preserve the appearance and durability of your DTF design.
-
Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash.
-
Turn garments inside out before washing.
-
Machine wash with cold or cool water.
-
Use mild detergent.
-
Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
-
Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry.
-
Do not iron directly over the printed design.
-
Avoid dry cleaning unless the garment and transfer have been tested for compatibility.
Troubleshooting Common Pressing Issues
Transfer Not Sticking Completely?
Check your press temperature, pressure, and pressing time. Uneven pressure or insufficient heat may prevent proper adhesion.
Design Lifting During Peeling?
Stop peeling immediately. Lay the carrier film back down and repress. Confirm that the transfer has received sufficient heat and pressure.
Design Looks Uneven?
Check for seams, wrinkles, or other obstructions beneath the garment. Make sure your heat press is heating evenly.
Garment Showing Heat Marks?
Some fabrics are more sensitive to heat and pressure. Test the material before production and consider using an appropriate protective covering.
